The Challenge

Much of rural India relies on kerosene stoves for cooking. Due to the ubiquitous nature of kerosene in many day-to-day activities, it becomes a necessary cost for India’s rural communities—a cost that many cannot afford to pay. Moreover, kerosene’s health risks and use of energy is a danger to its users and communities at large.

Servals' Approach

Servals Automation Private Limited (Servals) is a social enterprise engaged in the manufacture of clean, efficient, and affordable burners and stoves used for cooking. The energy-saving technology is also cost-saving, and it enhances the quality of life of the 300,000+ consumers Servals has reached to date. The flagship product of Servals is the “Venus” kerosene burner that provides approximately 30% more efficiency in kerosene consumption than existing burners.

Servals' Partnership with GBF

GBF is providing Servals with a loan to expand its geographic presence in the kerosene burner market, and set up the NGO distribution channel that will bundle its cooking solutions products and launch the company’s new TLUD biomass stove.

Servals' Impact

Low-income households in rural and urban areas of Tamil Nadu are the main beneficiaries of Servals’ products-- over 30,000+ consumers have been reached to date. Servals has also outsourced some of its kerosene burner manufacturing to a nonprofit organization to create rural economic opportunities.Servals provides all of the materials and knowledge, and the nonprofit organization provides the work environment and employees.
