I. INTRODUCTION
The Grassroots Business Fund (GBF) is a global impact investing organization whose mission is to help build and support High Impact Businesses that provide sustainable economic opportunities to millions of people living at the base of the economic pyramid. GBF’s unique hybrid approach blends investment capital and capacity building to High Impact Businesses, which then empower the poor as independent entrepreneurs and consumers of affordable goods and services.
II. Terms of Position
The Grassroots Business Fund is currently seeking an Investment Officer to be based permanently in Jakarta, Indonesia. The Investment Officer will work with his/her colleagues in the region (India) by joining regional calls to discuss pipeline opportunities, investment supervision, and partnership development. In addition the Investment Officer will be part of GBF’s global investment team and join GBF’s weekly pipeline committee meeting.
The Investment Officer would be responsible for the following:
- Accountable for daily operations of the region and more junior regional staff (if applicable) including managing the field office budget;
- Develop a strong pipeline of new quality investment opportunities in the region;
- Lead the due diligence process including but not limiting to: engaging with the prospective client, structuring the investment and technical assistance plan, building the financial model, and drafting the investment memo and other legal agreements;
- Lead and manage the relationship with existing clients including supervising the performance of the company, the technical assistance program and other related parties;
- Managing local relationships with partner organizations including: TA providers, pipeline generators, co-investors, local legal counsel and administrative support;
- Manage, track and analysis financial, social and operational metrics collected by the client companies;
- Contribute to organization-wide initiatives, including disseminating lessons learned and best practices across GBF and contributing to mentoring junior staff;
- Develop the region’s strategic plan and ensure that it is meeting its objectives ;
- Other ad hoc responsibilities as needed.
III. ESTIMATED TIMETABLE AND TERMS
The candidate for this position should be available to start no later than May 1, 2012 in Jakarta, Indonesia. This position is a full-time position with GBF pending successful performance in the first 6 month period. Given that the candidate will have regular calls with Washington, D.C. the candidate should be comfortable taking calls in the evenings.
VI. PROFILE OF SELECTED CANDIDATE
Candidates for the Senior Investment Officer position should be committed to supporting businesses that provide sustainable economic opportunities to millions of people living at the base of the economic pyramid. The candidate therefore should have a demonstrated track record in working in the Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) space in developing countries with previous investing and/or consulting experience.
The successful candidate will hold these qualifications:
- Related advanced degree and 3-5 years related experience, or related bachelors degree and 5+ years of related experience.
- Demonstrated ability of successful investment activities, client supervision work, and design and implementation of client TA interventions
- Demonstrated staff management, multi-tasking and budget management ability
- Demonstrated ability to execute sound judgment, solve complex and tough problems, and lead GBF strategic initiatives
- Excellent interpersonal and relationship management skills, with the ability to interact effectively with clients and colleagues from various cultural backgrounds.
- Experience working in emerging markets
- High level of written and oral presentation skills in English and Bahasa Indonesia (required);
- Previous working experience in Indonesia (preferred) and/or a developing country;
- Strong organizational, interpersonal and negotiations skills, particularly in cross-cultural contexts;
- Ability to work under pressure and manage and prioritize tasks effectively;
- Good interpersonal and social skills and ability to encourage team spirit;
- Previous knowledge of, and interest in, the field of social enterprise and grassroots development issues.
V: Location:
Jakarta, Indonesia with frequent travel within Indonesia and occasional travel overseas.

Internship - GBF-HQ (Office of the Chief Investment Officer)

II. SCOPE OF WORK
This is a new internship position crafted to support the office of the Chief Investment Officer (CIO) and his staff, and presents a unique opportunity for those interested in entering a career in business, finance and international development. Whereas the selected candidate will be performing mostly administrative and clerical functions, (s)he will be exposed to a fascinating subject matter that will serve them well in a variety of future careers. The CIO intern would be responsible for the following:
- Meeting Coordination: schedule/attend meetings, note-taking, and tracking meeting follow-ups
- Data Management: maintenance of critical reports, including key financial metrics
- File Management: organization and maintenance of electronic files
- Reporting Compliance: review of documents for accuracy, timeliness and adherence to standards
- Ad hoc responsibilities, as assigned by the CIO or other CIO staff.
III. ESTIMATED TIMETABLE AND TERMS
The position is available immediately for the Spring 2012 (January-May), or Summer 2012 (June-August), periods. The exact duration will depend on performance and availability. This is a part-time unpaid position (15-20 hours per week). The intern will be responsible for personal insurance, accommodation, and other living expenses while working at GBF.
VI. PROFILE OF SELECTED CANDIDATE
- Working towards a related undergraduate degree (e.g. business, international relations);
- Proficiency with MS-Excel;
- Strong interpersonal skills, and ability to work independently and in teams;
- Ability to work under pressure and manage and prioritize tasks effectively;
- High level of written and oral presentation skills in English;
- Working knowledge of a second language is a plus, but not required.

The Grassroots Business Fund is currently seeking a Legal Intern for our Washington DC office. The Legal Intern will work closely with GBF’s Counsel.
II. TERMS OF POSITION
Depending on availability, the Legal Intern will work on one or several of the assignments below:
- Legal Templates: Update all GBF Legal Templates, including term sheets, loan agreements, equity documents, etc.
- Compliance: Assist in implementing GBF’s compliance systems and procedures in accordance with GBF’s Operational Guidelines.
- Original Documents: Help to develop GBF’s system to track original executed agreements. Work with field staff to implement.
- Drafting: Work with field staff on Letters of Information, amendments, and any other documents that Counsel may request.
- Legal Due Diligence: Work with field staff to review organizational documents for pipeline investments.
- Miscellaneous. Other assignments on an as needed basis.
III. ESTIMATED TIMETABLE
The candidate for this position should be available to start no later than March 15, 2012, although an earlier start date is preferred.
VI. PROFILE OF SELECTED CANDIDATE
Candidates for the Legal Intern position should be current law students committed to learning about the legal aspects related to impact investing, private investment funds, and technical assistance for business in developing countries. Experience working in the Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) space in developing countries with previous legal, investing and/or consulting experience is preferred, but not required.
The successful candidate will hold these qualifications:
- Currently enrolled in an ABA accredited law school.
- Must be available for at least 15 hours a week (ideally, two full work days).
- At least two years relevant work experience.
- Outstanding communications and writing skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team.
- Detail-oriented, organized, with an ability to maintain records.
- Ability to work independently within a small, closely-knit organization.
