M
ore than 70 percent of rural Peruvians live in poverty, and a majority of them rely on subsistence agriculture. Agrícola Viñasol S.A. (AVSA) creates employment at the base of the economic pyramid by purchasing snow peas, corn, sweet potato, asparagus, carrots, and apples from small-scale farmers.
Created in 2001, AVSA is the commercial agricultural arm of the Instituto Rural Valle Grande (IRVG), a Peruvian NGO that works to improve the livelihoods of the smallholder farmers in Cañete Valley by advancing their production techniques. AVSA also provides continuous extension services to the farmers. All of the participating farmers’ land has been organic certified and has passed audits by Apio Inc., Marks & Spenser, Green Giant, and others. In addition, the company holds the GLOBALGAP certification.
